To provide information over and above the presence of the distinctive feature, the distinctive feature should either be replicated across foils or concealed on the target. In the present experiments, replication produced more correct identifications in target-present lineups ±without increasing the incorrect identification of foils in target-absent line ups± than did concealment. This pattern ±and only this pattern± is predicted by the hybrid-similarity model of recognition.

Creating fair lineups for suspects with distinctive features.

In their descriptions, eyewitnesses often refer to a culprit's distinctive facial features. However, in a police lineup, selecting the only member with the described distinctive feature is unfair to the suspect and provides the police with little further information. For fair and informative lineups, the distinctive feature should be either replicated across foils or concealed on the target. In...

MISCONCEPTIONS OF ROC ANALYSIS 1 ROC Analysis Measures Objective Discriminability for any Eyewitness Identification Procedure

Which eyewitness identification procedure better enables eyewitnesses to discriminate between innocent and guilty suspects? In other words, which procedure better enables eyewitnesses to sort innocent and guilty suspects into their correct categories? The answer to that objective, theory-free question is what policymakers need to know, and it is precisely the information that ROC analysis provi...

Eyewitness decisions in simultaneous and sequential lineups: a dual-process signal detection theory analysis.

Many eyewitness researchers have argued for the application of a sequential alternative to the traditional simultaneous lineup, given its role in decreasing false identifications of innocent suspects (sequential superiority effect). However, Ebbesen and Flowe (2002) have recently noted that sequential lineups may merely bring about a shift in response criterion, having no effect on discriminati...

Improving Eyewitness Identifications From Lineups: Simultaneous Versus Sequential Lineup Presentation

Staged crime research has demonstrated the utility of controlling the conduct of lineups as a means of reducing false identifications with little or no apparent decline in the rate of correct identifications by eyewitnesses (e.g., Lindsay & Wells, 1980; Malpass & Devine, 1981a; Wells, 1984). A recent variation in lineup procedure shows that a blank lineup, which includes no suspects, can reduce...
